Strawberries & Cigarettes by Troye Sivan

"So you sat and stared at my lips, and I could already feel your kiss."

First of all let's just mention and this song included in "Love, Simon," probably one of my favorite movies ever. The scene where Simon tells Martin that coming out was supposed to be his thing is so moving and relatable. Moving on into the actual song, it starts by describing the scene of the two people meeting. Now throughout the song, Troye refers back to strawberries and cigarettes because the memories were bittersweet. The two meet by one asking the other to light their cigarette, which could symbolize the two being rebels. They sneak out to see each other, however, one person locks their keys in their car so they sit there and stare at the other person's lips. There is this uncertainty between the two of them seeming like a summer love or like a fling. Moving on to the chorus, these two spend a lot of time together smoking, driving in the car and by the lyrics, "But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you," they probably made out. Talking about fate in the second verse, the person the main character made these memories with seems like a mysterious yet fun person who believes in things like fate, soulmates and things being meant to be. However, this relationship doesn't seem quite official due to the lyrics of, "Like that night in the back of the cab, when your fingers walked in my hand. Next day, nothin' on my phone, but I can still smell you on my clothes. Always hoping that things would change, but we went right back to your games." These intimate moments are being shared between the two however it wasn't really acknowledged and they went back to the game of "are we a thing or not?" Additionally, "Strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you," also could mean they will always be reminded of this person whenever they eat strawberries or smoke cigarettes and it conveys the intensity of falling for this person because they get reminded constantly of them. Just like being addicted to cigarettes, they are addicted to being around this person.

The whole summer fling and wondering and pining makes me love this song. I totally can't rate things out of 10 or out of 5 stars so let's say this is an million because of the aura I'm getting from this song. - ava
